Why study popular music?

Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University is developing the very best national and international raw talents into innovative and creative musicians. Located on Griffith’s Gold Coast campus, the program provides a conservatorium environment that nurtures creative talents in world-class facilities.

Spanning all popular music genres, the Conservatorium’s programs are designed to
broaden skills and can include collaborative projects with film, arts and multimedia
students. This unique approach ensures that students graduate from the  conservatorium as diversely skilled musicians.

World class facilities

• Four professional audio recording studios
• Six acoustically designed practice and live recording rooms
• Four audio and video post production suites
• Multimedia lab housing 21 professional computer systems including
• Audio recording and editing programs and hardware
• Midi sequencing programs and hardware
• Video capturing and editing programs and hardware
• CD and DVD authorising
• Post graduate and research study space

Entry requirements

• English IELTS result of 6.0 (with no sub score below 5.5)
• Recorded portfolio of 3 performances and/or original work including a brief statement about
• how the CD was recorded
• what instruments and equipment were used
• Personal statement listing
• musical experiences and achievements
• familiarity with computers and music software
• recording and/or song writing experience
• future music goals
• International students must also submit the Undergraduate International Student Application Form.
• It is recommended that applications should be submitted between July and December for admission in February Semester 1.

Program objectives

Unique to Griffith this program emphasises the musical innovation and creativity necessary to be successful in a wide range of vocations in the popular music industry.

The program combines the traditions of popular music production with modern technology within an academic environment that fosters skills in creativity and innovation.

It incorporates the learning approaches commonly found in popular music cultures by focusing on contemporary popular music practices, emergent technologies and skills in sound engineering and production, along with up-todate research in popular music history and analysis

Program structure

You will develop transferable skills, including creativity and imagination, self-assessment ability, self-directed learning and information literacy. You’ll also acquire skills in problem-solving and decision-making, critical thinking and analytical ability, writing skills, oral delivery, numeracy, information and communication technologies, teamwork and planning and project management.

As an integral part of this process, you’ll undertake both theoretical and practical training in popular music, with particular emphasis on the development of creativity in music technology, production, performance, songwriting and the business of music.

Career opportunities

You’ll find employment opportunities in large music organisations and the entertainment industry, as well as the education sector. Many graduates have gone on to establish their own businesses, such as recording studios, teaching studios, music distribution and artist and repertoire companies.

The Bachelor of Popular Music also serves as a first step for those wishing to develop careers in music research and higher education.
